Asian stocks recoil from renewed market concerns, open red across the board

  • The early Asia market session sees the Pacific sector resuming Wall Street's declines from late Tuesday.
  • Investors are balking at the prospect of renewed trade tensions following the current 90-day US-China tariff truce.

Asia-session equities are continuing Wall Street's Tuesday slump, heading into the downside in early Wednesday trading as markets see a resurgence of risk aversion on a slowing global economy and a revival of trade war rhetoric between the US and China despite last weekend's apparent tariff truce.

Japanese indexes are maintaining a reasonable stance, but still facing declines for Wednesday, with the Nikkei 225 down -0.40% into 21,950 with the Tokyo Topix down a comparable 0.30%. Chinese indexes are further down the slope, with Shanghai's CSI 300 declining -0.55% while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index is in full retreat, shedding -1.55% and more set to come, while Australia sees declines of -1.20%, fueled by a worse-than-expected showing for Australia's GDP which clocked in at just 0.3% for the third quarter, a marked decline from last quarter's 0.9% reading.

Emerging markets also remain off-balance, with the MSCI broad Asia-Pacific (excluding Japan) index down for the day by -0.90%, and risk sentiment heads into Wednesday carrying over the new week's notable lack of risk appetite as investors brace for further downturns and a resurgence of tariff talk in only a few weeks' time.
