The incident happened just after midnight local time on Friday when a powerful explosion ripped through Plaine Chalon, which is a sports centre located along Rue de Chalon. A number of people were inside the complex.
Chimay is near the border with France and about 89 kilometers (55 miles) south of Brussels.
It was not immediately known what caused the late night explosion, but there were no immediate indications that the blast was the result of terrorism, a law enforcement source said. Authorities have yet to release other information.
According to initial reports, at least one person has been killed and two other people have been seriously injured. It is unclear how many people were at the venue or whether any victims remain trapped underneath the rubble.
