PM Cameron reiterates intention to hold referendum on UK's EU membership

FXstreet.com (Barcelona) - Speaking at the annual CBI conference on Monday, British PM David Cameron assured that the country's economy is "on the right track". He also reiterated his intention to hold a referendum on UK's EU membership, after renegotiating the country's role in the European Union.

Cameron praised the improvements in the UK economy visible so far, adding however that it still should be made more balanced and resilient through deficit reduction. He stressed the importance of reforms, especially in education and welfare.

The British PM also assured that he wasn't “playing games with EU membership”, as he still intends to hold a referendum on it. He emphasized the need to renegotiate the organization of the European Union before the referendum, so that the British people could decide whether staying in a reformed Europe is more or less advantageous for them.

“The single market is fundamental to our future but the EU isn't perfect and there is a growing unease about the creeping extension of EU authority,” CBI director John Cridland commented at the conference, suggesting that "there needs to be more Britons in senior positions in key European institutions, including EU parliament and EC to ensure the UK's influence isn't diluted.”
