UK election update: Early results line with exit polls, pointing to a conservative win – TDS

FXStreet (Barcelona) - Strategists at TD Securities offer the key developments in the UK polls – SNP sweeping Scotland with 50 seats so far, LibDems hurting, and early results favouring a big Conservative win.

Key Quotes

“We’ve seen 312 of 650 seats reported so far, and from what we’ve seen it looks like the results are lining up with the exit polls, which pointed to a big swing toward the Conservatives compared to the pre-election polling. It’s still going to be some time before we have a better idea of how many seats the Conservatives end up with, but for now the bigger themes of the evening have been SNP’s massive win in Scotland, and the LibDems losing a huge number of seats.”

SNP Sweeping Scotland:

“With 53 of 59 seats having been reported, we’ve seen SNP win 50 of them and the LibDems, Labour, and Conservatives hang onto just one seat each. Just to illustrate the seismic shift, some of the ridings that had been polling as too close to call into the election haven’t even been close. Glenrothes for instance was one of these, where SNP won 60% of the vote compared to 31% for Labour, and in Paisley & Renfrewshire North we saw SNP lead Labour by 51% to 33%. We’ve also seen Jim Murphy, the Scottish leader for Labour, lose his seat to SNP with a result of 41% to 34%.”

LibDems Hurting:

“The LibDems have lost all but two of the marginal seats that we had highlighted, plus some other seats of key members in the last government. Leader Nick Clegg did manage to hold onto his seat of Sheffield Hallam, announced just moments ago. This makes it slightly more likely that the LibDems will agree to support the Conservatives going forward, but there are still huge question marks around that prospect. For one, Clegg may not remain leader of the LibDems for very long. And second, given the LibDems’ thrashing in the polls, there is probably very little appetite across the party for another coalition government.”

“There was already a lot of grumbling about the idea when the LibDems were projected to get around 25-30 seats, but now that they’re on track for only about 10 seats, the cries will be even louder.”
