Key Quotes

“The US data calendar will start the holiday shortened with the publication of November existing home sales seen edging marginally lower to 5.21m units following fairly robust 5.26m in October. Tuesday is packed with plenty of data including durable goods orders and Q3 GDP revisions, but more on that in our Global Daily tomorrow.”

“In the Eurozone, focus this week will be on Greece where on December 23 the parliament will hold a second vote to elect a new President and avoid early general elections. Prime Minister Samaras has 155 lawmakers in his governing coalition, which is well short of the 2/3 of majority required for the government’s candidate, Stavros Dimas, to become the president. Should the 2nd vote proves inconclusive, the third and final vote will be held on December 29 when the required threshold will fall to 180 votes. Failure to elect a new president will be lead to an early general election. According the latest opinion poll conducted by Public Issue, the main opposition Syriza would win with 36.5% of votes ahead of 29.5% for the governing New Democracy Party followed by Potami with 8.5% and Pasok (Samara’s coalition partner) with 6%. What could possible go wrong?”
